Referrals to Other Specialties (Trimitere)

About the referral (trimitere)
The referral paper is a medical document that allows you to benefit from a consultation with a specialist without paying for the consultation. It is essentially the link between specialties, used when we identify a problem that needs to be managed by a specific specialty or when additional investigations are required.
This simple piece of paper plays a very important role in all the stages a patient goes through, from detection and diagnosis to treatment and monitoring. Therefore, we will now answer the most common questions about the referral ticket.
Frequently asked questions
How long is a referral valid for?
The validity of the referral paper depends on the type of diagnosis. If it is an acute or subacute illness diagnosis, the validity is 30 days, and if it is a chronic illness diagnosis, it is 90 days.
How can I find out if I have a referral paper for an acute/subacute or chronic condition?
This detail can be found on the referral paper and is easy to identify. Somewhere in the middle of the page, in section no. 4 titled “Presumptive diagnosis/diagnosis,” you will see four square boxes with letters above them: P, A/S, C, and M.
- When the box checked is next to A/S, the referral paper is for an acute or subacute condition and is valid for 30 days (including the date of referral).
- When the box checked is next to C, the referral paper is for a chronic condition and is valid for 90 days (including the date of referral).
What happens if the validity of the referral paper has expired?
If the validity of the referral paper has expired and you didn’t manage to see the specialist for various reasons, you need to keep the old referral paper and bring it back to your family doctor. They will issue a new referral paper with a new validity period.
Can I receive two referral papers to the same specialty at the same time?
In short, no. Two referral papers issued at the same time to the same specialty would mean that the second one is for a second opinion, and this is not covered by the health insurance house, so the patient would need to pay for it.
How often can I receive referral papers to the same specialty?
In the case of chronic illnesses, only one referral paper can be issued per month to a specific specialty. The exception would be if a chronic condition suddenly worsens, in which case we don’t make the patient wait a month to receive care, but issue a new referral for that acute situation. Additionally, it should be noted that referrals can be issued for as many specialties as needed in the same month, but no more than one referral per specialty.
Can I use the same referral paper multiple times?
In many cases, depending on the specialty and the illness, a single referral paper gives you the right to multiple consultations within a certain period of time. Generally, the number of consultations is up to 3, and the period during which you can benefit from them is the validity period of the referral paper.
Can I receive a referral paper if I am not insured?
No. Referrals to other specialties are a service covered by the health insurance house. Therefore, only those who are insured can benefit from it.
Is the referral to a specific hospital or a specific doctor?
No, the referral is to a specific specialty. Each patient has the freedom and opportunity to choose the doctor, clinic, or hospital where they wish to be consulted.
